I recently stopped seeing a close friend of mine I had known for 15 years.

Before that, I attended his birthday parties, met his family, ate countless dinners and lunches with him, and even attended his wedding.

However, as the years went on, our friendship started to deteriorate until it was in a state that was unhealthy. Every time we met, I was always on the defensive and on my toes, trying to prepare for what he would do to me next.

Since we had known each other since middle school, I didn’t want our friendship to end because of our history together. However, the breaking point came when he attacked my self-worth for the umpteenth time, and I ended up feeling miserable about myself for days.

Enough was enough.

It was a difficult decision, but I eventually stopped taking his texts, emails, and calls.

We hadn’t talked since — and it was the best decision I made.

Although friendships that last as long as mine can be healthy, some are quite the opposite.
